Listening to BOTH SIDES OF THE SKY and thinking of one of my favorite Barry Hannah lines: "Hendrix [is] like the blues with a helicopter in it."

A writer I don't sing the praises enough is Ed McBain. Started snagging my old man's copies of the 87th Precinct novels when I was about 11. McBain was probably my first favorite, even before Stephen King. Anyhow, look at his badass author photo in the back of the copy of FIDDLERS I grabbed at the library for a quarter.

Got a copy of the UK edition, too. Really like this cover.

Oh, this is the best mail day ever. New Claire DeWitt. Now I'm happy.

A favorite picture of my mom (from my 1st bday party, I think--August '79). She's the best, and I'm thankful as hell for her every day. Happy Mother's Day, Ma!

Just over 16 years ago, Katie and I left New York and moved to Austin. While we were there, we saw the film BIG BAD LOVE. I immediately went to BookPeople and bought this, my first Larry Brown book. He pretty quickly became my favorite writer. I'd also already been really into R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, T-Model Ford, and all that great Fat Possum stuff. We moved back to NY. I started to wonder about Oxford. I read interviews with Brown and learned about Square Books. Soon enough, I got into Barry Hannah. I wanted to get to Oxford. Well, now we've been here almost ten years. @SquareBooks is a big part of what makes it feel like home. My book launch is there tonight at 5:30--I'll be in conversation with pal and hero Jack Pendarvis. Hope to see you there!
